Kivo Health, an AI-powered virtual care company transforming how seniors manage chronic disease, announced an oversubscribed $10 million Series A led by Allumia Ventures, with participation from Corewell Health Ventures, Y Combinator, Heuristic Capital and MassMutual Ventures. The round brings Kivo’s total funding to more than $16 million and will accelerate its national expansion and development of its AI-powered care platform.
Kivo is tackling one of the biggest challenges in American healthcare, delivering effective, proactive care to seniors living with chronic disease. The company is starting with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), the third leading cause of death worldwide and the fifth leading cause of death in the United States.
COPD-attributable direct medical costs in the United States are projected to reach approximately $60.5 billion by 2029.
Despite the availability of effective treatments, millions of patients struggle to access the care they need, often receiving intervention only after their condition has worsened enough to require hospitalization.
Kivo is changing that model by combining dedicated clinical teams with an AI-powered platform to deliver personalized, proactive care directly in patients’ homes. By engaging patients between clinical visits and supporting earlier interventions, Kivo helps seniors manage their conditions, improve their quality of life, and avoid costly hospitalizations.
At the center of Kivo’s offering is a fully virtual pulmonary rehabilitation and care program. Pulmonary rehabilitation is a guideline-recommended treatment for COPD, with strong clinical evidence demonstrating meaningful improvements in quality of life, exercise capacity, and breathlessness, as well as reduced hospital readmissions following COPD exacerbations. Yet adoption remains extremely low. A large US Medicare study found that only 2.7% of patients hospitalized for COPD received pulmonary rehabilitation within 12 months of discharge.
Traditional facility-based programs create significant access barriers, particularly for older adults with limited mobility, complex medical needs, or long travel distances. By delivering supervised pulmonary rehabilitation virtually, Kivo aims to overcome these barriers and expand access to an effective, historically underutilized treatment.
A peer-reviewed study of Kivo’s virtual pulmonary rehabilitation program demonstrated:
- 24% improvement in symptoms
- 34% improvement in functional capacity
- 25% improvement in mood
- 83% median program attendance
An independent actuarial analysis also found that Kivo’s model could reduce total healthcare spending by $8,245 per member per year through fewer hospitalizations, emergency room visits and nursing home days.
“Up to thirty million Americans have COPD, and the system only shows up for them when they are already in the hospital,” said Victor Sadauskas, MD, Founder and CEO of Kivo Health. “By thoughtfully combining high quality clinical care with AI, we can now scale proactive, accessible care to every senior, improving symptoms and reducing avoidable costs. This is the first step in addressing the $1 trillion in annual healthcare spend on chronic disease among seniors.”
The new funding will enable Kivo to expand its health plan partnerships and clinical operations nationwide while advancing its AI platform to support patients across the full COPD journey. Over time, the company plans to extend its approach to additional high-cost chronic conditions, building a scalable model for delivering proactive care to millions of seniors.
“We are excited to be partnering with Kivo as it rapidly scales its clinically-proven program to COPD patients across the country. Less than 3% of eligible patients receive pulmonary rehab despite evidence of 56% fewer hospitalizations and meaningful improvements in quality of life. Access remains the central barrier as in-person clinic capacity is severely limited, and those who stand to benefit most are often the least able to attend, due to frailty, limited mobility, or geographic isolation. Kivo’s virtual program bridges this access gap,” said Dan Galles, Partner at Allumia Ventures
Kivo’s programs are covered by most major health plans, including UnitedHealthcare, Humana, Blue Cross, Aetna, Priority Health, Medicare, and Medicaid, making its care accessible to a growing population of seniors across the country.
The company’s existing investors include SNR Ventures, Liquid 2 Ventures, Samsung NEXT, Magic Fund and operator-angels who previously founded or held executive roles at Omada Health, Virta Health, Iora Health, Doximity and VillageMD.
